Malawi






The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi Limited (ESCOM) is a public utility incorporated under the companies act and is involved in the generation, transmission, distribution and supply of electricity in the country. It operates 4 hydroelectric power stations.

Nearly 95% of Malawi’s electricity supply is provided by hydropower from a cascaded group of interconnected hydroelectric power plants located on the middle part of Shire River and a mini hydro on the Wovwe River.


  • Nkula Hydro Power Stations, consisting of 2 independent Power Stations namely Nkula A and Nkula B but sharing the same intake pond are located in Neno in the Southern Region and are the first of three cascaded power stations on the Shire River owned and operated by ESCOM Limited. They were constructed to utilize the Nkula Falls and have a combined capacity of 124 MW
  • Tedzani Hydro Power Stations comprises of three Power Stations: Tedzani I, Tedzani II and Tedzani III Hydro Power Stations with a combined capacity of 92.7 MW and is located 7 km downstream of Nkula Hydro Power Stations on Shire River.
  • Kapichira Power Station is located in Chikwawa District in the Southern Region of Malawi and is the last power station downstream of three cascaded power stations owned and operated by ESCOM Limited. It is built on Kapichira Falls. The first phase has an installation capacity of 64 MW and the second phase will add another 64 MW into the power system.
  • Wowve Mini Hydro Power Station has a capacity of 4.5 MW
